Mails are delivered by electric cars

Itella is Finland’s largest transport company that is also responsible for national mailing services. Now, it starts testing electric cars in mail deliveries.

The test begins in October 2010 in Varkaus and in greater Helsinki area with two Volkswagen Caddy vans that have been turned into full electric vehicles.

The new technology and its suitability for mail deliveries is being monitored until next spring. Altogether, Itella operates more than 5000 vehicles, with combined annual use of more than 100 million kilometres.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is responsible for testing and optimization of the vehicles. The vehicles have been developed in collaboration between Itella, European Batteries Oy and Valmet Automotive Oy.
